About Hilary | Lumen Icons
As an artist and Anglican priest, I seek to weave the strands of tradition, creativity and prayerful challenge together in my icons. Holding faith and provocation together is a challenging practice at times, but I try to do this with some playfulness.
I write icons of religious and secular individuals who embody extraordinary virtues and qualities. I particularly enjoy depicting a range of different people, not just idealised religious figures. Some remarkable people are also deeply complicated, and I enjoy exploring their complexity. This means I often prefer to write icons of unsung/marginalised people or to re-imagine and re-write traditional icons, emphasising the humanity of the person involved. By lessening the pedestals of a few and expanding the representation of others, I hope to push against religious purity culture and advocate for inclusion and grace.
There is a growing group of untraditional, post-sacral iconographers who unpack and re-examine religious icons, and I consider myself a part of this movement. As I am based in Aotearoa, I hope to contribute a uniquely Oceanic voice, highlighting the significance of context and place in iconographic practice.

Primarily, my artworks are original religious icons written from an Anglican tradition. Occasionally, I will also paint other artworks
The prints use off-white, archival museum-quality paper. They are uncoated and the superior choice for art enthusiasts who appreciate world-class quality to enjoy artworks most luxuriously. All of Lumen Icon’s prints, framed prints, and cards are produced by Gelato, an international, high-quality printer.
Features:
The 250 gsm/ 110lb paper is perfect for fine art, designed to last for years without losing its original beauty. The matte paper is uncoated and natural white (off-white). With alkaline papermaking technology, this print is acid-free, meaning the pH of the pulp that is used to form the paper is above 7 (neutral). The paper is also buffered with an alkaline reserve, such as calcium carbonate, to neutralize acid compounds absorbed from the atmosphere or formed through natural aging. This ensures that your print will last many years without any yellowing or discolouration. The prints are free from or low in OBA (optical brightener additives). This ensures that the natural white colour of the paper remains consistent under different lighting conditions. In contrast, the colour of papers that contain optical brighteners can shift depending on the light source. Additionally, the colour of OBA-free paper remains more consistent over time so that you can enjoy the print for years without any shifts.
The paper used is FSC-certified paper or equivalent certifications, depending on regional availability. It's better for the people and the planet.
Each print is shipped in robust packaging, ensuring it arrives safe and secure. Paper sizes may vary slightly by region. For the US and Canada, the measurement is in inches, while for the rest of the world, it is in centimetres. It is printed and shipped on demand.

Framed Prints
The wooden framed prints are the perfect combination of sleek and sturdy. The print paper has the same features as above.
Frame Features:
The frames are made from pine and come in white. They are 20-25mm/ 0.79"-0.98" thick and 10-14mm/ 0.4"-0.6" wide, providing the perfect balance of durability and style. To keep your print looking its best, we use shatterproof, transparent plexiglass to protect it from damage. We include hanging hardware with every order, making it easy to hang the frame in both horizontal and vertical orientations.
